I guess it has happened to a lot of gifted writers that a lifetime of published work simply disappears from the collective memory.

I noticed like you that the body count is rather high in this novel for the kind of novel it is. People get killed in those train wrecks.

Charles, Lynde can put together a good plot-driven story that's highly readable today.

Patti, thanks for coming by; when I get to the book about all these early western writers, Lynde will get a good long chapter.Ron Scheerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15357501069513854664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3434602314756730550.post-5628005604423328942011-04-08T08:20:59.351-07:002011-04-08T08:20:59.351-07:00Fascinating, Ron. He was one of the top writers for POPULAR MAGAZINE and published dozens of hardbacks by Scribner, Bobbs-Merrill and other top hardcover firms.

This novel first appeared in POPULAR as a complete novel in August 1907. I see I read it back in 2002 and my note says:

"Decided to read this because of Barzun and Taylor's favorable comment in CATALOG OF CRIME. Usual well done POPULAR novel--railroad business, clean cut hero, pretty girl, but more violence than usual."

Francis Lynde is most famous for his series of stories about Scientific Sprague, some of which were collected in a book and praised highly by Ellery Queen as one of the corner stones of short detective literature.

I have a friend known only as The Major or sometimes as The Reading Machine, who collects Francis Lynde and has over 50 hardcover first editions. We often spend time talking about the latest Lynde book that we have read but it sure is a terrible shame that he has been so completely ignored by the readers of today.Walker Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16089880902426182100noreply@blogger.com
