After marrying Jessie Benton, he and Carson are on their first survey of the Oregon Trail and their hunt for "Buenaventura" River, a mythical river that supposedly runs west down from the Sierras. As for the movie, artistic freedom allows Hollywood to be free and loose with the facts, they argue, since it's entertainment, not a documentary.
