In fact, they weren't born far apart, although my dad never went to California. He ran a small farm, raised cattle for beef. For a while we did milk, and that is awfully hard work, though it was mostly done by the time I came along. I think my father was a lot more social than I am but he also loved to be out among the cattle and to watch the grass grow big. Farming wasn't for me either but I can think of no more honorable a profession.
