I know what you mean when you bring up the theme of the open range. I like these type of tales also.

But the mining stories deal with greed for fast riches and a very hard life prospecting for gold, sometimes for years. Most miners never really made any money despite living lonely lives away from their families. I see alot of drama and conflict in such fiction. I love stories of the range but I also like to change off and occasionally read about prospecting, etc.

Another very interesting review about one of the better western writers, but one not often discussed nowadays.Walker Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16089880902426182100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3434602314756730550.post-71757649316076758542010-09-28T11:06:22.918-07:002010-09-28T11:06:22.918-07:00The only White books I've read are the four in...The only White books I've read are the four in the Andy Burnett series, but I enjoyed them A LOT, and plan to read them again.Evan Lewishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07620731784654779358noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3434602314756730550.post-24875406694046681592010-09-28T09:11:46.619-07:002010-09-28T09:11:46.619-07:00Cheyenne, it wasn't an easy book to get throug...Cheyenne, it wasn't an easy book to get through. White was just getting started as a novelist.

Charles, yeah, I've found a lot of plain-cover books dating from that period. Have no idea, though, whether they had colorful dust jackets when they were new. They look very "serious" without them.Ron Scheerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15357501069513854664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3434602314756730550.post-60549053417362270382010-09-28T08:17:01.831-07:002010-09-28T08:17:01.831-07:00That cover reminds me definitely of childhood read...That cover reminds me definitely of childhood reading. In those days the covers were often so plain but it was the inside that counted for me.
