This all makes sense to me based on the little I know about the Klondike gold rush.Ron Scheerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15357501069513854664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3434602314756730550.post-32032724690340273402013-12-05T20:29:10.145-08:002013-12-05T20:29:10.145-08:00I too enjoyed Stewart in those westerns I have see...I too enjoyed Stewart in those westerns I have seen but can't comment on this one.
I can comment on the plot since, in the course of doing research for my own stories I've come across the following tid-bits;
1. Three men attempted to take cattle up to the Klondike gold fields, two from central BC and one from what is now Oregon. Of the almost 200 cattle that started out only a few 100 pounds of very stringy, fatless beef made it to Dawson. They were all butchered shortly after entering the Yukon and a great deal of the meat wound up in the lake or the river. All three men where then broke and had to start again.
2. Bringing cattle from Skagway to Dawson would be almost impossible. From Anchorage to the Yukon River and then up river to Dawson ... maybe. Later, after the initial rush, that is how most supplies made it there.
3. Gunfights in Skagway did happen. In Dawson the North West Mounted Police would have locked you up. Due to their small numbers they also didn't wast any time ... there are several graves in the Yukon to demonstrate their lack of patience.
4. The contention by many that men in the Yukon (and Canada) did not carry firearms is completely untrue. They didn't carry in communities since due to the Mounties there was no need and those same police would let them. Everyone either had a weapon are partnerred with someone who did. Those who could afford it also carry a side-arm, sometimes a .22 carried by a trapper for his work or something larger for the many like Soapy Smith.
5. The cattle business in British Columbia was started by US residents who drove cattle up through the Okanagan to the Cariboo gold rush, first in 1862 and for many years after. Many of these cattlemen ... both owners and drovers ... stayed and became immigrants to the British colony and later citizens of the new country of Canada.
Even though I write novels I try to include information such as this as part of my story, whatever that might be.
www.dmmcgowan.blogspot.comD.M. I even enjoyed this one though it may not be as good as the others.Walker Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16089880902426182100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3434602314756730550.post-28014561065675086252013-12-03T23:21:40.324-08:002013-12-03T23:21:40.324-08:00Ron, thanks for the review. In fact, I haven't seen many of John Wayne and Randolph Scott westerns either and I'm quite keen to see how these three tall men sit in the saddle.Prashant C. Despite Winchester '73 in which is is perfect, I don't much like his other, highly rated, westerns, Two Rode Together somewhat of an exception. Here, he should have been replaced by, John Wayne, Randolph Scott, someone dangerous and distant not your maiden aunt's favorite nephew. barrylanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09507827607600595861noreply@blogger.com
