To some extent, I think they are there for female readers to identify with. I see him as sort of an ok but nothing special writer of westerns. One thing that really bothers me is the romance angle with the pretty girl. Too many good lookers wander through these novels.<br /><br />When I think about the females in the west, I see wives of settlers, prostitutes, daughters of some ranchers, and a few girls working in laundrys, restaurants, and general stores. I guess many cowboys could just about go through the entire month without interacting with women.
