I recently read Frank O’Rourke’s book, and it’s interesting to compare it to the script by writer-director Richard Brooks. I’ve been writing a biography, “Tough as Nails: The Life and Films of Richard Brooks,” to come out in spring 2011, and comparing his scripts to their source material. He made some good choices for the movie version of “A Mule for the Marquesa.” For one thing, he cut the number of “professionals” from five to four. He also moved the standoff from the middle of the book to the end. And Brooks came up with the twist that drives the plot after the assault on the hacienda. A novelist himself, Brooks believed that a screenwriter should take a free hand in developing a movie from a book, noting that the two media are so different. Allow me to recommend Brooks’ other two westerns, “The Last Hunt” (1956) and “Bite the Bullet (1975), interesting entries in the genre. – Douglass K.
