Here's another goodbye to what will soon be known as "the old neighborhood" (four weeks from today we'll be officially gone). During the exodus from Iran, following the fall of the Shah, Westwood became the home of a great many Persians. The area along Westwood Blvd, south of Wilshire is known by some as Little Teheran.
Markets, retailers, restaurants, and various professional services have opened up shop along here. You can get videos and CDs in Farsi, even Persian ice cream. This is one of several bookstores. A New Yorker once wrote a book about LA called Los Angeles: Capital of the Third World, which I often think of because the city has so many ethnic neighborhoods like this. If the book was ever translated into Farsi, it's probably inside.
What a wonderful, diverse area. I would love to try Persian ice cream.
ReplyDeleteHeck, I wish you were staying just so we could keep getting the "around the neighborhood" images.
ReplyDeleteWould love to visit such a neighborhood. We don't have one down here.
ReplyDeleteI hope the Iranians are enjoying their new-found freedom in L.A.and I don't wanna see any of 'em protesting against the United States and flying their Iranian flags. Another nice photo.
ReplyDeleteManchester (England) was of similar cultural changes. It certainly has a diverse culture as does LA. I quite like the areas and looking round the different shops, supermarkets etc.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo, Ron. I'm with Chris. I'm going to miss the "guided tour" when you move away!
