Photo-finish Friday: Marilyn

Had occasion this week to be in downtown Palm Springs, where the new Marilyn Monroe sculpture has been installed across the street from Starbucks. Even in the 100-degreee heat, she had a big crowd of folks wanting to have their photo taken with her. She just arrived from Chicago, will be here for six months, and then moves on somewhere else.

Unlike the flat image of her in The Seven Year Itch, where she stands over a subway vent to catch a draft, she's in three dimensions, and you can have a look from various perspectives. (See below.)

Photo-finish Friday is the bright idea of Leah Utas over at The Goat's Lunch Pail.

Coming up: Saturday music, Brooks and Dunn

  2. Gee, with Marilyn that size, how can one help not looking up her dress! I wish I knew she had been in Chicago.

  5. One of my favorites. Great photos! Maybe Phoenix will be on her itinerary if she likes the hot weather there.

  7. A few weeks ago Indian papers ran a story about Marilyn's sculpture based on THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH pose being removed because it didn't go down well with the people. I wonder if this is the same one, travelling now.

    1. When I first read your comment, I thought you were referring to the Indian tribes in Palm Springs. That actually would make sense...It did stir up some controversy among art critics while in Chicago, but she's pretty removed from that crowd out here.

  8. Ron, Marilyn continues to get her share of attention in the media in India. Yes, I remember now, it was her sculpture in Chicago. You often find the previous generation in India talking fondly of her and her films.
