This car dealership has stood at the corner of Jefferson and Figueroa in LA for decades. The owners got the right to use Felix the Cat of cartoon fame in the 1920s and the current sign went up in 1958. Now there are efforts afoot to have it preserved as a Historic Cultural Monument. I walk by here on the way to/from work and snapped this one afternoon recently.
Ron, I love this. What a wonderful character shot. I hope it gets preserved.
ReplyDeleteLove pictures like this!
ReplyDeleteKeep it there!
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing about this sign for a while. I thought it had been approved to be preserved, but maybe I'm wrong. Another one I love is the big Randy's Donuts donut, and of course the original Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake. L.A.'s full of 'em.
ReplyDeleteGreat pic. My vote would be to preserve as well.
ReplyDeleteWhich cat was it that used to be used in certain pornographic movies? Was that Fritz the Cat? I never saw one of the movies, only saw ads for them.
ReplyDeleteThanks, everybody, for weighing in on the cultural value of the Felix sign. I've done some research and can't find any more recent action by the City since October 2007, at which point the landmark status was declined.
ReplyDeleteYes, Charles, Fritz the Cat was another animal.
Feels like it should be a restaurant of some kind.
