The frontier West in history, myth, film, and popular fiction
My all-time favourite country song is "Streets of Laredo". It has been done by countless performers, who, each in turn, lend the classic text countless shades of melancholy, regret and grief. Both Marty Robbins and Don Edwards have done tender, standard versions of the song, but John Cale did a dirge-like art-rock version that stands out particularly.
Don Edwards can pretty much do no wrong. But I agree that the John Cale version is powerful.
+1Don Edwards is especially talented.
