Photo-finish Friday: animal planet

I snapped this on a September morning last year, waiting for an appointment in the shade of an outdoor food court. Reaching down to move my chair, my hand fell on this little creature, and after the initial surprise I set it on the table where it kept me company like this for a long time. Amazing member of the Animal Planet. I'm glad they don't come any larger.

Photo-finish Friday is the bright idea of Leah Utas over at The Goat's Lunch Pail. This photo is going to be my last for a while, but as I venture again into the big, busy world I just retired from, there will certainly be more.

Coming up: Tom Lea, The Wonderful Country (1952)

  1. Cool. I have no idea what it is, but it sure does have personality.

  2. yeah, pretty good size. Imagine one of those frozen in ice from ancient times and about King Kong size. :)

  3. It's either a gnat or a praying mantis though it doesn't look like one or the other.

    1. Praying mantis. One of the few I've ever seen.

  4. Ron, I have only seen green-coloured praying mantis out here unless this species is native to your part of the world. They can teach humans (non-monks) a thing or two about staying still for hours. Fascinating creature.

  5. I haven't seen either a p.m. or a grasshopper in years.
